Modified bitumen roofing (Mod-Bit or MB roofing), a type of roofing that involves modified bitumen membranes, was first developed in Europe in the 1960s. This means that this invention is over 60 years old and is still used today. With such staying power, this roofing concept must have plenty of good qualities.
So does it? Read on to learn about some of the advantages of this flat roofing material.
What Are Modified Bitumen Membranes?
Mod-Bit roofing is a type of roofing commonly used for waterproofing a flat roof. When roofers install this roofing on a low-slope roof, they typically apply a few layers of material. The top layer is a modified bitumen membrane made of asphalt along with rubber or plastic.
These membranes usually come in a rolled-up form. Roofers will roll the membranes out and attach them in a variety of different ways. They can heat weld, cold adhere, and, sometimes, self-adhere, the product.
Four Advantages of Modified Bitumen Roofing
There are a few different types of MB membranes. These products usually fall under the categories of atactic polypropylene (APP) membranes and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) membranes. However, both share most of the same advantages.
1. Resistant to Many Outside Forces
MB Roofing is resistant to a lot of weather-related and other roof-damaging forces. Most weather debris like hail and branches won’t tear it. The same goes for any foot traffic.
It also does not absorb most of the heat and UV rays the sun creates. As a result, the building below will be cooler.
2. Great For the Environment
To start with, most MB roofing materials can be recycled.
On top of that, the ability of this roofing to reflect heat makes it more energy efficient. Occupants of the building below won’t turn up the AC as much in a cooler building. This means that they’ll use a lot less fossil fuel energy.
3. Flexible
A lot of roofing materials will contract and expand with temperature changes. This behavior can often cause the roofing materials to fall apart over time. As mod bit membranes are flexible, they can shift with the changing temperatures without falling apart.
4. Easy for Roofers to Work On
It is quick and easy for roofers to install Mod-Bit materials on a roof. In addition, roofers can repair any tears or holes that MB membranes develop in a snap. All they have to do is apply a special patch.
